  • Blog Action Day

I didn't intend to post about Blog Action Day, but I had to at least respond to Daniel's 5 Practical Tips:

    1. Turn off the lights when you leave the room - Check! I program in the dark like many people. There are no lights.
    2. Turn off the computer when possible - You can't be serious. My desktop takes 10-15 minutes to power up, boot, connect to the network, load outlook and be ready to work. But it seems MUCH longer. If you want me to go postal, make me turn off my computer at night. Anyway, if I didn't keep Outlook running it would take an hour EXTRA because of all the email I'd have to download in the morning. Yeah, great idea in theory, but never going to happen.
    3. Print only when necessary. Check. I don't remember the last time I printed anything.
    4. Use flourescent lamps. See 1. No lights.
    5. Use "Energy Star" electronic gadgets. Check. I thought this was the law here, but certainly everything seems to get that sticker nowadays.

Dear James, I did not participate in Blog Action Day either. However, I wrote a belated post of my own about an environmental issue that might strike a cord with some of your readers. This is an issue in the United States construction industry that gets little media attention. I am wondering if your British folks back home are hearing anything about it: Brazilian Teak Floors, Slave Labor, and the Destruction of the Rain Forest. You can find it at: http://www.realestatetwincities.net/blog/ Anything that you can do to help promote awareness of this issue will be greatly appreciated. Normally, I don't ask for this kind of help, but the issue is that important to me. Thank you!
