Cancelled Mozy

I don't think I've been led astray by Scott Hanselman before, but Mozy was a disaster.

Uninstalled.

I sent in a tech support request last week after not being able to see any list of files to restore (after 12 hours of "loading"). No reply yet, so they are outta here.

Just to confirm that I made the right choice, this is what I saw after hitting submit on the account cancellation page:

Application error (Rails)

'nuff said.

I'm puzzled by your experience James? I've been using Mozy since July '06 and the restore process has always worked great for me. Out of curiosity, I tried to restore some files after reading this article and the Mozy restore page loaded the contents of "My Documents" within seconds and I had a zipped copy my x-mas photos in less then a minute.

That sucks! I was hoping it was just something weird in my setup, but I never got any hints what that could be. Shame...

Madness. I've had no trouble. I'll ask them what's up. Sorry it didn't work out.

For online backup, you should not be misled by false press and cheap price. You need to find companies that's been around for some years and have been tried and true. After all, online backup service is no more reliable than the company itself. I suggest you to try DriveHQ.com, the DriveHQ WWWBackup software is extremely easy to use, with full features to support versioning and email backup, very reliable. I have been using it to backup about 18GB of data with no problem at all. I am even started using their FTP and email hosting service now.

Same here for Mozy and Scott. :T I signed up 2½ weeks ago. It wouldn't run for me (all my home data is on an SBS server, and it won't backup over the network from my workstation), so I emailed them the same day to cancel and refund. I've emailed 3 times since then, and they have never responded.

I'd suggest XZ Backup. Their software is solid, they are quick, and restore your backup immediately. I used Mozy before, but I had similar problems. Plus the uploads took forever, even though I have a very fast connection. Uploading is much faster with XZ.. not sure why, Mozy must limit how quickly you can upload or something. When I do a restore with this software, it starts downloading it instantly. Mozy would take forever to 'prepare' the download and then not work anyway. Oh, a nice plus too is you can run it on as many computers as you want without paying extra- I back up my PC's files and my laptop all to the same backup account. It's obviously more than Mozy, but it's worth it if you actually want to get your data back. The website is www.xzbackup.com
