    I'm looking forward to seeing how this pans out - most people I've read seems to say that Netflix rules, Blockbuster drools.

    I disagree (and I'm not alone)

    Blockbuster's recent (and well overdue) improvement to their service should kill Netflix, all things being equal. The interesting part is always that it's not the best service that wins. Still, my money is on blockbuster (well, my $20/month at least)

    Netflix simply cannot compete can they? Unless they quickly do a deal with some other nationwide store - but that won't get them the ability to give free movie rentals while you wait for the mail. No, they're screwed.

After years of wandering (seemingly) endless loops through the local blockbuster and staring at all the popcorn movies and hollywood formulaic crap, Netflix was like a breath of fresh air: at last, real selection! Since I only watch 1 or 2 movies a week (and my little tykes always want to watch the movies we get them about 20 times each) the throttling issue has never really effected me. Blockbuster (and most other brick and mortar stores) are never going to have the selection or titles I want, so a free movie rental is worthles if they have nothing I want to see.

Blockbuster via email is the same as Netflix (same large selection, right?) - but the store gives them a) faster delivery (they deliver from your queue as soon as you drop in the store, saving one postal trip) and b) the option of a free movie while you wait - for kids or "dreck" sure, but it's still an option for most people.

(Plus if a person likes less popular fare, will it really be ready for pickup at the local Blockbuster any faster than by mail?) If other people like the "dreck" it's good for them, I was merely commenting that for myself it holds no appeal. Am I the minority here? Sure, but it holds up for me nonetheless...
